AJAX, ON, Sept. 3 /CNW/ - Plans for a new Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer
Centre are one step closer to reality following a very successful fund-raising
event sponsored in part by Veridian. The charity event, coined Hockey Night in
Barrie, took place on August 14th at the Barrie Molson Centre. More than
$100,000 was raised to support the Royal Victoria Hospital expansion project,
which will include a new regional cancer centre.
"We're very pleased to have been given the opportunity to lend support to
the construction of this important community resource," said Michael Angemeer,
Veridian's President and CEO. "It is expected that the new cancer centre will
open by 2010, and that it wil provide services to residents throughout Simcoe
County and the District of Muskoka, including the communities of Barrie,
Orillia, Bracebridge, Huntsville, and Gravenhurst."
Veridian was a platinum sponsor of Hockey Night in Barrie, contributing
$5,000 of the total amount raised. The hockey game was attended by about 4,000
people who took in a charity game played by current and former NHL players,
plus a host of community leaders and celebrities.
According to Angemeer, "Veridian is committed to playing a leadership
role in creating sustainable and vibrant communities, and support of local
medical facilities is a central focus. We're very proud of our track record of
generous support for hospitals that serve the communities that our customers
