The map is full color and shows landforms and satellite imagery at a
scale of 1:3.5 million (107 cm x 193 cm, 42" x 76"). Overlaid on this imagery
are the following key features:
-- Operating and planned power plants, shown by fuel mix, capacity and
utility/non-utility status. Labeled with operating company and plant name.
Over 1,100 plants, including 750 operating, 325 greenfield, and 30 expansions.
-- More than 65,000 miles of existing and proposed transmission lines
signified by voltage.
-- Existing and proposed substation locations for identifying grid
connections and market centers
-- Insets showing provincial data such as generation by technology,
proposed vs. existing capacity by fuel, imports and exports to the United
States and to other provinces and Industrial/Utility generation.
-- Data tables showing plant capacity, operators, fuel, map location and
proposed online date (where applicable)
-- Detailed insets of Vancouver, Alberta, Toronto, Windsor, and Southern
-- Labeled in English and French!
"Updating this map was a difficult task because information sources are
much more fragmented in Canada than in the U.S.," said Jason McMahan,
principal at Bolder Geographics. "An individual company's infrastructure can
cover areas the size of entire North American Electric Reliability Corporation
(NERC) regions. Load centers are often remote, and few research maps are
available. And, of course, Canada is a bilingual society. We've tackled all
of these challenges and are confident that this remains the most comprehensive
map available detailing the Canadian electric power system."
"Canadian power markets are attracting a lot of investment in both new
generation and transmission, with more than 70,000 MW of new power plants
being actively pursued across Canada," said Ventyx VP of Business Development
Will Dailey. "There is a strong push for new renewable and hydro generation as
Canada grapples with efforts to reduce carbon emissions, and this is
attracting a lot of new players into North American markets. Now more than
ever, players in the North American energy space need a comprehensive
understanding of the Canadian electric power system. And, as always, the
strength of the Ventyx databases ensures that this is the latest, most
detailed and accurate map available."
