Vehicle Stops by the Cornwall Community Police Service and the OPP leads to RCMP seizure of Fine Cut Tobacco



    CORNWALL, ON, Oct. 24 /CNW/ - Three Cornwall, Ontario residents are
facing charges for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped under
the Excise Act 2001 following vehicle stops by the Cornwall Community Police
Service and the Ontario Provincial Police.
    On October 22nd, 2008, an officer from the Cornwall Community Police
Service stopped a 1998 Dodge Durango in a commercial parking lot in Cornwall,
Ontario as the licence plate was expired. When the officer approached the
driver, he observed clear garbage bags of fine cut tobacco. Cornwall RCMP
officers were contacted to assist and seized 15 garbage bags containing 332.73
kilograms of fine cut tobacco. The vehicle was also seized. A 20 year old
female driver and 21 year old female passenger were arrested and later
released to appear at the Cornwall court on December 1st, 2008. The driver was
also issued a Highway Traffic Act ticket by the Cornwall Community Police
Service for using a licence plate not authorized for the vehicle and driving
while under suspension.
    Later on the same date, officers from the OPP stopped a 2005 Cadillac
Escalade on Highway 401 eastbound in South Glengarry, Ontario that had an
expired licence plate. The officer approached the driver and observed several
garbage bags of fine cut tobacco inside the vehicle. Cornwall RCMP members
were contacted to assist and seized the bags that contained fine cut tobacco
which totaled 419.2 kilograms. The vehicle was also seized. The 43 year old
male driver was arrested and released to appear at the Alexandria court on
December 3rd, 2008. The driver was also issued a ticket by the OPP for the
expired licence plate.
    "The fine cut tobacco that we seize is believed to be processed in the
United States and then smuggled into Canada", said Sgt. Michael Harvey of the
RCMP. "The Cornwall RCMP has seized 24,972.60 kilograms of fine cut tobacco
between January and September 2008".
