VANOC congratulates Minister of State Gary Lunn and Minister James Moore on their new responsibilities



    VANCOUVER, Oct. 31 /CNW/ - John Furlong, Chief Executive Officer for the
Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter
Games (VANOC) yesterday congratulated Gary Lunn, M.P. for Saanich-Gulf
Islands, on being named Minister of State (Sport).
    "I would like to extend our congratulations to the Honourable Gary Lunn
on his appointment as Minister of State (Sport). The Government of Canada is a
key partner in our efforts to stage outstanding Olympic and Paralympic Winter
Games in 2010 and we are delighted that Minister of State Lunn who, as BC M.P.
knows our project well, is assuming responsibility of this partnership with
just over 460 days before Canada hosts the Games," said John Furlong.
    "We also congratulate Minister James Moore on his appointment as Minister
of Canadian Heritage and look forward to continuing to work with him. Minister
Moore has always demonstrated unwavering support and enthusiasm for the
Games," continued Furlong. "On behalf of our entire team, we look forward to
strengthening the already solid partnerships on the road to 2010 as we pursue
a common goal of ensuring that all Canadians benefit from the hosting of the
2010 Winter Games."

    VANOC's government partners provide funding, infrastructure, essential
service support and management services to the 2010 Winter Games, which will
contribute to lasting economic, sport, cultural and social legacies. VANOC's
government partners include the Government of Canada, the Province of British
Columbia, the City of Vancouver and the Resort Municipality of Whistler. To
date, members of VANOC's Contributing Province and Territory Program include
Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Quebec and Yukon. VANOC's Venue
Cities are Richmond, Surrey and the District of West Vancouver. VANOC has also
signed memoranda of understanding with each Canadian province and territory.
    VANOC is responsible for the planning, organizing, financing and staging
of the XXI Olympic Winter Games and the X Paralympic Winter Games in 2010. The
Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games will be staged in Vancouver and Whistler
from February 12 to 28, 2010. Vancouver and Whistler will host the Paralympic
