Vancouver Team's "Harmony House" Comes Out On Top

A Winner Of CMHC's EQuilibrium(TM) Sustainable Housing Demonstration
    Initiative

    VANCOUVER, Feb. 13 /CNW/ - A team consisting of Vancouver's Habitat
Design + Consulting Ltd., a local design and consulting firm, and Insightful
Healthy Homes Ltd. has been chosen to design and construct one of three new
CMHC EQuilibrium(TM) Sustainable Housing Demonstration Initiative homes, the
Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development
Canada (HRSDC) and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage Housing
Corporation (CMHC) announced today.
In total, three builder and developer teams, including Vancouver's
Habitat Design + Consulting Ltd. "Harmony House" team, have been chosen to
build eco-friendly homes as part of the second phase of CMHC's EQuilibrium(TM)
Sustainable Housing Demonstration Initiative - a national project leading to
the construction of the next generation of sustainable homes in British
Columbia and Atlantic Canada.
"The Government of Canada is proud to work with Habitat Design +
Consulting Ltd. and Insightful Healthy Homes Ltd. to extend the
EQuilibrium(TM) initiative to B.C.," said Senator Yonah Martin on behalf of
Minister Finley. "As a champion of sustainable housing, the Vancouver design /
build team, and the other teams participating in the EQuilibrium(TM)
initiative, are putting their expertise to work for the benefit of Canadians
and providing a blueprint for the next generation of sustainable housing in
Canada."
"Harmony House" will use a mixture of proven and leading-edge
technologies to build a highly marketable, resource efficient, healthy,
net-zero energy home.
"We're extremely excited to be a part of the initiative," says Chris
Mattock of Habitat Design + Consulting Ltd. "The Harmony House will provide a
healthy indoor environment for the occupants, have low environmental impact
and will be less expensive to operate and maintain than a conventional home."
In addition to "Harmony House", the other two winning projects are:

The Green Dream Home (Kamloops, B.C.): a partnership between the Canadian
Home Builders' Association (CHBA) Central Interior Chapter and Thompson Rivers
University (TRU); and,

The Moncton VISION Home (Moncton, N.B.): a project by Alterna Home
Solutions Inc. in partnership with Vision Land Development Ltd.

The EQuilibrium(TM) housing vision brings together, under one roof, the
principles of occupant health and comfort, energy efficiency (including
renewable energy production), resource conservation, reduced environmental
impact and affordability. CMHC originally launched the EQuilibrium(TM)
initiative in May 2006 by inviting Canadian builders and developers to submit
their visions for EQuilibrium(TM) demonstration homes. Six projects have since
been completed and opened to the public for viewing. For more information on
the EQuilibrium(TM) initiative and projects, visit www.cmhc.ca.
CMHC has worked closely with many stakeholders to develop and launch
EQuilibrium(TM). In particular, CMHC has collaborated closely with Natural
Resources Canada which has contributed substantial research and development
expertise and resources to advancing the initiative.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of
experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally
sustainable, and affordable homes - homes that will continue to create vibrant
and healthy communities and cities across the country.

CMHC EQUILIBRIUM(TM) SUSTAINABLE HOUSING DEMONSTRATION INITIATIVE
      -----------------------------------------------------------------

EQuilibrium(TM) is a national sustainable housing demonstration
initiative, created and led by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC),
which brings the private and public sectors together to develop eco-friendly
homes that address occupant health and comfort, energy efficiency and
renewable energy production, resource conservation, reduced environmental
impact and affordability. It offers builders and developers across the country
a powerful new approach to meet the growing demand for
environmentally-friendly housing and to establish a reputation for building
sustainable homes that will meet the needs of Canadians now and well into the
future.
In May of 2006, CMHC invited Canada's builders and developers to submit
their ideas for EQuilibrium(TM) demonstration homes. A total of 72 builder-
and developer-led teams submitted proposals. An evaluation committee of
independent housing experts then selected 12 teams to build EQuilibrium(TM)
demonstration homes across Canada. The first request for proposals yielded
successful projects in the Prairie Region, Ontario and Quebec.
Phase 2 extends the EQuilibrium(TM) Initiative across Canada, with three
builder and developer teams chosen from British Columbia and Atlantic Canada.
As part of the initiative, all EQuilibrium(TM) homes are open for a
minimum six month demonstration period, and then monitored for performance for
a minimum time period of one year. To date, six EQuilibrium(TM) homes are
completed and available for public tours. The completed projects include the
Avalon Discovery 3 House, and the Laebon CHESS Project, both in Red Deer,
Alberta, and the Riverdale NetZero Project in Edmonton; the EcoTerra project
in Eastman Quebec; the Now House(TM) project located in Toronto, and
Inspiration- the Minto ecohome in Ottawa, Ontario.
An EQuilibrium(TM) home is designed to be a highly energy-efficient, low
environmental impact house that provides healthy indoor living for its
occupants, and produces as much energy as it consumes on a yearly basis.
The objectives of the EQuilibrium(TM) initiative are:

    - To reduce the energy and resource intensity of the Canadian housing
       sector
    - To ensure high quality, healthy housing that mitigates household
       energy costs
    - To contribute to a clean environment and reduced greenhouse gas
       emissions
    - To foster growth of the renewable energy and sustainable housing
       industries in Canada
    - To develop Canada's next generation of value-added exports for
       competitive international markets

CMHC has worked closely with many stakeholders to develop and launch
EQuilibrium(TM). In particular, CMHC has collaborated closely with Natural
Resources Canada which has contributed substantial research and development
expertise and resources to advancing the initiative. For more information on
