Victoria Technician Named Canada's Best Accordion Player
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 30 /CNW/ - A 25-year-old Victoria
telecommunications technician at the BC Ambulance Service has been named
Canada's Best Accordion Player. Ivan Preanicov was the winner at last week's
National Finals of the 2nd Roland V-Accordion Festival, the accordion scene's
answer to "Canadian Idol," hosted by Roland Canada Ltd.
Preanicov is a native of Moldova who almost gave up the accordion before
his move to Canada nearly four years ago.
His performance at the National Finals began with a moment of silence as
he prepared, with eyes closed, to play a pair of traditional European
accordion pieces: the Spanish suite No. 3 by Anatoli Beloschizki and Voronezh
Cowboy by Vyacheslav Chernikov. As he began to play, it soon became clear that
Preanicov is a master musician of not only great skill but great passion. His
performance showcased his incredibly fast technique as well as his intense
musical ability. Though all contestants showed technical proficiency,
Preanicov's infusion of feeling brought some audience members to the verge of
tears and earned him the first place finish.
Preanicov's passion for the accordion started at age 14 when he found his
uncle's old instrument in his attic. After taking years of music lessons, he
eventually graduated from the musical lyceum of Sergey Rachmaninov in
Kishinev, Moldova in 2001. Soon after, Preanicov put his accordion away to
concentrate on earning a technical university degree and to move to Canada.
His love for the bellows was not forgotten, however. In March 2008, he bought
a new instrument and started to play once more, vowing never to stop again.
His win at the National Finals is a definitive step in that direction and
secures him a place at the International Finals of the Festival in Italy this
The 2nd Roland V-Accordion Festival invited accordion players from across
Canada to submit a short video of an accordion performance to Roland Canada
between April 2 and September 5, 2008. Roland Canada received dozens of video
entries from accordion players across the country who all demonstrated great
skill with the accordion. Narrowed down from this pool of entrants, the three
final competitors hailed from Montreal, Quebec City and Victoria, showcasing a
wide cross-section of Canadian talent.
The finalists performed at the 2nd Roland V-Accordion Festival National
Finals on September 25, 2008 at the Hansa Haus in Mississauga, ON, where Ivan
Preanicov was crowned Canada's Best Accordion Player and awarded a
top-of-the-line FR-7 V-Accordion as well as the honour of representing Canada
at the International Accordion Finals in Italy this November. Sergiu Popa from
Montreal placed third in the competition and Steve Normandin from Quebec City
took third spot.
