Urban Housing Starts Increase in August

ST. JOHN'S, NL, Sept. 11 /CNW/ - Urban housing starts increased in
August, according to preliminary data(1) released today by Canada Mortgage and
Housing Corporation (CMHC). For the month of August, total housing starts were
up four per cent, with 179 posted across provincial urban centres compared to
172 a year ago. Of the 179 starts, 160 were recorded within the St. John's
metropolitan area compared to 144 last August, an increase of 11 per cent. To
date, urban housing starts total 1006, up seven per cent.
"The increase in August housing starts marks the third consecutive month
that we have recorded favourable numbers over last year," said Chris Janes,
Senior Market Analyst with CMHC in Newfoundland and Labrador. "It is expected
that the recent Hebron announcement will provide the economic stimulus for the
upward trend in residential construction activity to continue throughout
2007," added Janes.
For Canada's urban centres, total housing starts increased six per cent
to 16,771 in August over August of 2006. Single-detached starts shed two per
cent to 8,103 while multiple starts of 8,668 represent a 15 per cent jump
compared to last August. Throughout Atlantic Canada, there were 999 urban
housing starts, a notable 38 per cent gain over the same month last year.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation conducts a monthly survey of
housing construction in urban centres of Canada with a population of 50,000
and over.
