UQTR to grant honorary doctorate to Aline and Jean Chrétien

    MONTREAL, Oct. 7 /CNW Telbec/ - On November 23, l'Université du Québec à
Trois-Rivières (UQTR) will grant a joint doctorate honoris causa to Aline and
Jean Chrétien in recognition of their significant contributions to the
development of the Mauricie region.
"This honorary doctorate will be jointly granted to Mrs. Aline Chrétien
and Mr. Jean Chrétien," said Mr. Ghislain Bourque, rector of UQTR. "The
University would like to recognize their significant contributions to the
economic, social and cultural growth of our region. Throughout Mr. Chrétien's
political career, he and his spouse demonstrated a joint commitment to
promoting the interests of the Mauricie, both at home and abroad. They have
offered tremendous support to infrastructure and economic renewal projects,
and to the growth of the regional recreational tourism industry. They have
also actively participated in many charitable causes and in contributing to
charitable organizations. In addition, the Chrétiens have helped UQTR to
achieve its research and educational goals, as well as playing a major role in
the publication of l'Histoire de la Mauricie - a sweeping history that
highlights the local population's pride of place and sense of belonging. It is
for these reasons, as well as for their other exceptional contributions to the
history and life of the Mauricie, that UQTR is granting Aline and Jean
Chrétien the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa."
The honorary doctorate was proposed by the Département des sciences
humaines at UQTR. The University's Board of Directors approved the proposal on
September 22, and it was confirmed by the Université du Québec Board of
Governors on October 1.

    The Honourees

Mr. Jean Chrétien was elected Member of Parliament for Saint-Maurice
11 times, and served as Prime Minister in three consecutive majority
governments. During his four decades in Parliament - as an MP, cabinet
minister and Prime Minister - he was always passionate in protecting and
promoting the interests of the Mauricie, and of major regional development
projects. These include the Taxation Data Centre in Shawinigan-Sud and the
creation of La Mauricie National Park.
For her part, Mrs. Aline Chrétien has always been at her husband's side,
and has dedicated herself to helping others. She has served as honorary
president of numerous social and community events, both in Quebec and across
Canada, and has offered her support to many fundraising campaigns to benefit
charitable organizations. UQTR has benefited from her generosity as well -
Mrs. Chrétien served as sponsor for the Histoire de la Mauricie fundraising
campaign and launch ceremony.
November 23 will mark the first time that Mr. And Mrs. Chrétien, who have
shared more than 50 years of their lives together, will have received a joint
honorary doctorate.
