MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 16 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has
assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the
circumstances of a motor vehicle collision involving a Toronto Police Service
(TPS) police car that occurred this morning in east Toronto.
The SIU investigation has determined that at 9:29 a.m. a TPS police car
being driven by a 24 year old male officer was responding to an armed robbery
call at a bank. The police car had its lights and siren activated. The officer
was alone in the car. In the area of Dawes Road and Gower Street the police
vehicle collided with a car that was being operated by a 76 year old male.
The police officer was taken to the Trauma Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital.
The driver of the other vehicle, who was the lone occupant, was taken to
Toronto East General Hospital. He was later transported to the Trauma Unit at
SIU investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
