CRTC could rule as early as today
TORONTO, Dec. 20 /CNW/ - The Canadian Media Guild, which represents more
than 100 broadcast operations employees at Alliance Atlantis, is awaiting the
decision from the CRTC on CanWest Global's application to buy the company. The
CMG understands that the decision could be released as early as today.
The CMG is concerned about CanWest Global's application for several
reasons, including the role of US investment bank Goldman Sachs in financing
the deal. Other concerns stem from the further concentration of Canadian media
ownership that would result from the sale.
"Alliance Atlantis has been a very successful specialty broadcaster and
film distributor," says CMG president Lise Lareau. "We worry that the sale
will reduce competition in the specialty sector and that the Alliance Atlantis
channels will be used as cash cows to finance the growing CanWest media
empire. What does the sale mean for original Canadian programming? What does
it mean for employment in this important sector of the Canadian economy? These
are questions we really hope the CRTC will address in its decision."

first collective agreement, which runs to April 30, 2011.
