TORONTO, June 8 /CNW/ - UJA Federation (UJA) and Canadian Jewish Congress
Ontario Region (CJCONT) commend the Ontario Progressive Conservative party for
taking the lead to recognize the value of strengthening public education by
including non-Catholic faith-based schools in the publicly funded education
The PC position was articulated today by party leader John Tory.
"This approach to public education is a welcome step that will serve
Ontario students well," said CJCONT chair Joel Richler. "It opens the door for
members of all parties to support a more inclusive school system that
strengthens public education."
"We are confident that Ontario residents will see the difference between
this approach and previous policies," noted UJA Federation chair David Engel.
"This plan is not a tax credit and it only applies to faith-based schools, not
elite private schools."
Over the past two years, CJCONT and UJA have advocated a more inclusive
public education system embracing all faiths based on a number of primary
- Non-Catholic faith-based schools, like Catholic schools, should be
part of public education in Ontario.
- Like all public schools, faith-based schools should meet appropriate
provincial criteria and accountability requirements.
- Ontario faith based schools should be treated in an equitable manner,
regardless of religious affiliation.
"This should not be a partisan issue," noted Richler. "It's simply the
right thing to do. We are confident Ontarians and their elected officials will
see the wisdom of a more inclusive public education system," he added.
"UJA Federation and CJC Ontario Region are deeply committed to the health
and vitality of public education in Ontario. Inclusive public education should
be a reality for all of Ontario's children. It's the Ontario way and the
Canadian way," said Engel.
