Travelocity.ca Awards Vegas Vacation to Photo Contest Winner

AMATEUR ENTHUSIAST BEATS OUT COMPETITION IN NATIONAL PHOTO CONTEST

TORONTO, Oct. 17 /CNW/ - This summer, Travelocity.ca called upon
photographers and travellers across Canada to share their best pictures in the
Travelocity.ca Share Your Travel Experiences Photo Contest. And Canadians
fully embraced this challenge with gusto.
Out of more than 3,000 entries, Travelocity.ca's Photo Contest judges
selected a winner from each of the ten established categories, including one
overall Grand Prize winner. Calgary's Jim Paulson's picture of his daughter
paddling across a pond just outside of Langenburg, Saskatchewan won him the
top honours in the contest - a three night trip for two to Las Vegas.
Out in the canoe with her homemade paddle, courtesy of her Grandpa, four
year old Madeline and her father paddled towards the canola fields at the edge
of the pond. The image of his daughter in the front of the canoe, her new pink
Barbie lifejacket set upon her shoulders and her special paddle in hand,
struck Paulson as being particularly picturesque. He was right.
"In addition to loving the photo, the judges enjoyed the fact that this
was a typical Canadian father, out spending a beautiful day with his
daughter," said Brian Simpson, General Manager, Travelocity.ca. "Mr. Paulson
isn't a professional photographer and didn't use a fancy camera. Yet, it's a
fantastic shot and we're thrilled to have selected him as our Grand Prize
winner."
The winning picture came from the Fun with Family and Friends category
and was selected for its impressive composition, sharpness and vivid colours.
In addition to the trip to Las Vegas, Mr. Paulson also won a photo finishing
package, courtesy of contest partner Black's Photography. Winners in the other
nine categories, as well as the User's Choice and Community winners, each
received a digital camera from Travelocity.ca, and photo finishing package
from Black's. The User's Choice and Community winners were selected for
receiving the highest rating among visitors to the site and being an active
participant and voter, respectively.
"One of the things that struck the judges, aside from the sheer quality
of the submissions, was that half of the winning pictures were taken in
Canada," continued Simpson. "It's clear that despite the emphasis and appeal
of international travel, Canadians are proud of their country and love to
travel within its borders to experience all that it has to offer."
The judging panel, consisting of Edmonton photographer Paul Burwell,
Travelweek editor Kathryn Folliott, Canada AM Travel contributor Loren
Christie, Dienna Schmidt, Manager, Imaging Support from Black's, Leafs and
Raptors official photographer Graig Abel, and Brian Simpson of Travelocity.ca,
spent a full day in careful deliberation before deciding on the winning images
in each category. What distinguished the winning pictures was the creativity
of the shot and the representation of the category in which it was entered, as
well as the composition, colours and uniqueness of the photograph.
"The Travelocity.ca Share your Travel Experiences photo contest was a
chance for Canadians to demonstrate their photography prowess and to share the
memories from their travels with the online community," said Phil Chapman,
Vice President, Imaging and Business Development, Black Photo Corporation.
