MONTREAL, June 4 /CNW Telbec/ - In the first transcultural mental health
initiative of its kind, the community resources and psychiatric treatment
system of the West Island Montreal, are holding a symposium at Stewart Hall on
June 6th, 2007. The topic will be a comparison and cultural exchange on
community services for the mentally ill and those in social crises. A
delegation from the Lombardy region of Italy will participate.
Drs. Claudio Percudani and Giogio Cerati of Milan will be review novel
concepts and community outreach interventions in serving the needs of this
very vulnerable population. Clients with depression, schizophrenia, and
bipolar illness suffer chronically from functional problems that prevent their
reintegration into "mainstream" society; yet the burden is on the medical
system to help them, and the solutions are not always apparent.
The combination of community mental health services and medical resources
in the West Island Montreal have developed, over the last decade, novel and
effective approaches to the challenge of illness in the community. Basically,
a shared care model involving a multiplicity of interventions, not just
medical, has proven remarkably successful and has kept waiting times and
availability of medical resources more optimal than in many other areas of
Quebec. The reasons for this efficiency will be described in the symposia, and
how the recent Quebec mental health reform will interact with this model in a
very positive way will be outlined.
Dr. Fiore Lalla, Medical Director of mental health care services for West
Island Montreal, and moderator of the event, notes, "The exchange of ideas and
concepts in this transcultural format is an innovative forum. We hope that
many individuals interested in the future of mental health care will attend
this landmark event. We know that Montreal's Italian community is pleased to
welcome colleagues from Milan."
The event will be held in Stewart Hall, Pointe-Claire on the picturesque
lakeshore (corner Lakeshore and St. Jean boulevards), on June 6th, 2007, from
11:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm. All mental health workers and administrators on the
Island of Montreal are invited to attend. The meeting will be followed by a
tour of the mental health community resources in the West Island. Lunch is
provided free for the first 50 attendees. Media sources are cordially invited.
