Tour For Kids in its Fifth Year of Raising Funds for Children's Cancer Camps in Ontario

Annual event expected to raise a record $1.25 million to give children
with cancer a summer camp experience

TORONTO, Aug. 8 /CNW/ - Four hundred cyclists will be pedaling through
cottage country again this summer in the fifth annual Tour For Kids event - on
their way to raising much needed funds for children's cancer camps in Ontario.
The four-day, 800-km bike tour - themed "Ride Somewhere Meaningful" - will
circle Ontario cottage country, linking up with Ontario summer camps for
children with cancer. This year, the event is expected to raise $1.25 million,
bringing the total funds raised over the past five years to approximately
$3.2 million. To date, Tour For Kids has been able to send over 2000 children
who are fighting cancer, to enjoy a summer camp experience.
Based on the founding principles and volunteer model of the Tour For Kids
event, and the generous support of corporate sponsors, 100 percent of the
donations raised go directly to Camp Trillium, Camp Quality and Camp Oochigeas
to help send children to camp and provide the required support and treatments
during their stay. Riders raise funds through pledges and have the opportunity
to dedicate their ride to a child or loved one who has been impacted by
cancer.
Investors Group continues to support Tour For Kids as Presenting Sponsor,
helping fund the operation of the event, while raising additional funds and
building awareness for the camps.
"We're proud to be returning, not only as sponsors but active
participants in the Tour For Kids," said Sandy Greene, Area Marketing Manager
for Investors Group. "The event has had a tremendous impact on our Consultants
and employees, who appreciate the opportunity to get involved in their
community and take part as volunteers in such a meaningful event."
Tour For Kids 2008 will kick off with an opening ceremony at Mississauga
Civic Centre on Thursday, August 14th, complete with dignitaries, bagpipers
and a police escort for the riders. The group will set out at 9 a.m. cycling
in a circuit through Muskoka, the Haliburton Highlands and Kawartha Lakes
regions before returning to the Civic Centre on Sunday, August 17th. Cyclists
will ride the 800 kms at their own pace over designated scenic rural routes,
fully supported with rest stations, accommodations and meals along the way. A
celebration including music, entertainment and food will be held for the
cyclists and supporters at the Civic Centre when they return on Sunday
afternoon, with special musical guests including Hello Beautiful.
In Canada, approximately 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer
annually and another 10,000 are already living with cancer or its long-term
effects. Extensive and frequent - often daily - treatment regimens rob
children of their ability to enjoy a normal childhood for up to three years
and often longer.
Tour For Kids, a part of the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation, is
focused on funding programs that fill an important gap in the care and
treatment of children and their families impacted by cancer.
"Tour For Kids has established a reputation for attracting hundreds of
compassionate and enthusiastic cyclists who want to make a real difference,"
said Jeff Rushton, founder of Tour For Kids and Coast to Coast Against Cancer.
"The experience and friendships last a lifetime and the positive impact we
have had and continue to have on the lives of children facing cancer keeps us
very focused on our goals."
