Tough times call for acts of boldness in charitable giving

TORONTO, Feb. 25 /CNW/ - In his recent annual letter Bill Gates announced
plans to increase his foundation's donations despite a reduction in its
endowment. And here in Canada TD Bank's Ed Clark just released his decision to
forfeit $3 million of his salary, donating it to charity instead.
"This is leadership," says Julia Howell, Founder of Community Investment
Partners, a new strategic philanthropy consulting company. "Charities are the
hardest hit in an economic downturn and people like Gates and Clark understand
this."
According to Howell, the decision to go public is as important as their
responsiveness.
"Especially in tough times, donors have a responsibility to boldly share
their philanthropic story so that their good work can be an inspiration to
others."
