Toshiba of Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada partner to protect Canadian biodiversity

Leading technology manufacturer commits to three-year partnership and long-term technological support of national conservation organization

TORONTO, April 19 /CNW/ - Toshiba of Canada announced today a three-year partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), Canada's leading non-profit land conservation organization. As a corporate partner and the primary private sector supporter of the non-profit's Land Information System (LIS), Toshiba aims to assist NCC in fulfilling its mandate- to protect threatened natural areas and biological diversity across the country.

"Toshiba and NCC share the core belief that protecting Canada's most threatened landscapes is integral to preserving the country's rich biodiversity and overall environmental well being" said Ralph Hyatt, President and CEO, Toshiba of Canada. "We are proud to support such a worthy cause and to continue Toshiba's long legacy of impactful corporate citizenship in Canada."

Through the partnership with Toshiba, NCC can now integrate powerful technology into conservation work with the development of the Land Information System. Created by NCC science staff, this advanced digital management system is a robust tool that will enable the non-profit organization to track, monitor and manage Canadian conservation data through a single, online database. NCC experts will now be able to access critical conservation information instantly, allowing them to save time while improving conservation outcomes.

In addition to supporting the LIS, Toshiba will donate laptops and new CAMILEO camcorders for NCC fieldwork.  Since its inception in 1962, NCC has helped to conserve more than 2 million acres (over 800,000 hectares) of ecologically significant land nationwide.

"While this support will make an immediate impact on NCC's work in the field, Toshiba of Canada is really making a commitment to future generations," said Lynn Gran, NCC's Vice President, Strategic Philanthropy and CDO.  "Thanks to Toshiba's financial and material support NCC is able to work more effectively to protect the landscapes and species we all love."

Today's announcement marks a milestone in Toshiba's 20 year history of environmental commitment in Canada that includes eco-conscious product development and Toshiba's Environmental Recovery and Recycling Effort (TERRE). Toshiba employees are also encouraged to participate in NCC Conservation Volunteer Days to see, from the frontlines, NCC's efforts in action.
