Toronto's youngest teachers honoured



    TORONTO, June 16 /CNW/ - They're just marking their first birthdays, but
a group of babies are being celebrated tomorrow for their contribution to
teaching over the past school year.
    Over 100 babies will be honoured at the annual year-end Roots of Empathy
Baby Celebration in Toronto. With their parents, these babies have been
teaching children in local classrooms within the Toronto District School Board
important life-long lessons about emotional literacy, respect, inclusion,
human development and the indelible relationship between parent and child.
    Founder/President of Roots of Empathy, Mary Gordon will be in attendance
to help celebrate along with the Roots of Empathy babies, Instructors and
families who have made a lasting contribution to the well-being of a
generation of Toronto children. Jeff Sprang, local Roots of Empathy supporter
will serve as the event's emcee.
    Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that reduces
levels of aggression among school children while raising social/emotional
competence and fostering empathy. In Toronto this year, 111 classrooms
involving almost 3,000 students are participating in Roots of Empathy
programs. Since 1996, Roots of Empathy has reached over 107,000 children in
the province.
    Toronto is the home of Roots of Empathy. Piloted in 1996 in two Toronto
schools it has grown across Canada and internationally in English, French and
in Aboriginal communities across the country. Its national/international
office is located in Toronto. The Roots of Empathy program and its founder
have won international awards for building resilience in at-risk youth and for
the power of the contribution to social entrepreneurship. This spring TDSB was
announced as the Roots of Empathy Centre of Excellence which will see a select
group of schools and Roots of Empathy instructors delivering the highest
quality of programming in Canada.
