TORONTO, Oct. 8 /CNW/ - Brandon Hall announced that Courses by Wire Inc.
(www.coursesbywire.com) and its client Hydro One Networks Inc. have jointly
won a coveted 2008 Brandon Hall Bronze Award for "Best Use of Blended
Learning". The announcement was made at the 14th annual Innovations in
Learning Conference held on September 25, 2008 in San Jose California. The
winners are listed at www.brandon-hall.com .
"I could not be more proud of the team at Hydro One and my colleagues at
Courses by Wire. This award is a true testament to the exceptional talent in
both organizations that delivered on this important and exceptional project,"
says President and CEO of Courses by Wire, Larry Crase.
This award was presented for the first of several programs to date, the
Controller in Training Program. This 2 year program was implemented to teach
new controllers at the Ontario Grid Control Centre to monitor, control and
operate the provincial electricity system. Controllers are responsible for
maintaining the reliable flow and provision of electricity throughout the
entire province and as part of the North American electricity grid, responding
to both normal situations and unplanned emergencies in real time.
"This training program was of vital importance to Hydro One. We were
facing a potential shortage of skilled controllers due to pending retirements.
Our systems and procedures had evolved dramatically and our previous training
program was not up to date. Courses by Wire helped us plan and develop a "best
in class" curriculum utilizing a mountain of content drawn from dozens of
tangible and intangible sources. This program has delivered," says Grid
Operations Manager T&D, Hydro One - Ontario Grid Control Centre, Rob
The award winning program consisted of a blended learning strategy that
combined structured self-paced e-learning, facilitator-led instruction, and
extensive use of exercises and simulations to provide experiential learning.
It utilized mentorship as well as continuous and comprehensive assessment of
student comprehension. Content was tailored to the target audience and there
was a continuous improvement strategy to ensure that it would be efficiently
maintained and kept up to date. Overall training was driven by measurable
organizational performance objectives.
Average trainee evaluation results for the e-learning lessons and
presentation material was 96.5% on 22 electronic evaluations with 70% of the
trainees achieving 100% on all evaluations. Average overall controller trainee
rating of the curriculum was 86.5% (strongly agreed that the program was
challenging but effective).
After a thorough review of all submissions, the independent judges for
Brandon Hall determined that the Controller in Training Program was a bronze
winner in the blended learning category. It excelled in fitting the learning
needs of the situation as well as supporting the learning objectives and
providing measurable benefits and outcomes.
