Toronto Elections Manager honoured with Prestige Award

    MISSISSAUGA, ON, June 24 /CNW/ - Janet Andrews, Manager of Elections for
the City of Toronto, is the recipient of the 2009 Prestige Award from AMCTO
(the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario). Ms.
Andrews was presented with the Prestige Award during AMCTO's 71st Annual
Meeting and Professional Development Institute on June 16th in Sault Ste
Marie, Ontario.
    AMCTO is the largest municipal professional association in Ontario, and
the leading professional development organization for municipal administrative
staff. AMCTO presents the Prestige Award annually in recognition of a career
of outstanding commitment to the ideals of the Association and exceptional
contributions to the municipal profession.
    Janet Andrews has become known as the go-to person in the area of
municipal elections. The recipient's skills and expertise are not only
legendary in Ontario - she has also acted as a consultant in several other
provinces. As noted by 2008-09 AMCTO President, Ray Callery; "It is hard to
imagine what the municipal election process in the City of Toronto and in
municipalities across the province would be like without the contributions of
Janet Andrews."

    Among Ms. Andrews notable career accomplishments are:
    - Leading the way in significantly revising the Municipal Elections Act
        during her tenure with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing;
    - Developing new processes and procedures to manage the huge and
        complex municipal election process in the City of Toronto;
    - Developing contractual agreements for implementing an elections
        services business offered by the City of Toronto, which has led to
        her involvement in elections in British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and
        New Brunswick.

    According to Greg Essensa, the Chief Electoral Officer for Ontario,
"Janet is generous with her knowledge and her time, and is always willing to
lend a hand and help as required. One of the things I miss the most about
working with her is her willingness to provide candid and honest advice. In my
25 years in the election business, I have yet to meet someone with as much
municipal election knowledge as Janet."
    Ms. Andrews is an ardent animal-lover, and has been actively involved for
many years in the Community Association for Riding for the Disabled and with
the Markham Animal Care Committee.
