TORONTO, Oct. 16 /CNW/ - With just four days before Toronto City
Council's unprecedented land transfer tax vote, City Councillors will be
speaking directly to REALTORS(R) about this issue at the Toronto Real Estate
Board's Annual General Meeting on October 18 (details provided below).
"REALTORS(R) support fair solutions to the City's financial challenges. A
doubling of the land transfer tax is simply not fair," said Maureen O'Neill,
President of the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB). "Mayor Miller's plan would
force less than five per cent of the City's residents, home buyers, to
shoulder over 70 per cent of the City's budget shortfall. There is nothing
fair about that. We look forward to hearing City Councillors' views on this at
our AGM on October 18".
The key note session of TREB's AGM will focus on the City of Toronto's
proposed second land transfer tax. The session will include a panel of City
Councillors moderated by Linda Leatherdale, Money Editor for the Toronto Sun
and Host of Money Line TV Show. The panel, which will take video questions
from TREB Members, will include Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong, Councillor Mike
Feldman, Councillor Mike Del Grande, Councillor Case Ootes and Councillor
Michael Thompson. Prior to the panel, Councillor Minnan-Wong will address TREB
Members. Over 1,000 TREB REALTOR(R) Members are expected to attend.
"With our AGM just four days before City Council's unprecedented vote,
REALTORS(R) will be rallying together to send a strong message to City Council
that a land transfer tax is not fair," said O'Neill.
