Toronto communities put a new Spin on fundraising for HIV charity

Social media project SpinTO to help Friends for Life Bike Rally reach $1
    million goal

TORONTO, May 5 /CNW/ - Toronto's technology, queer, and cycling
communities have come together to launch <a href="http://spinto.ca">SpinTO</a>, a fundraising project for the
 <a href="http://www.bikerally.org/">Friends for Life Bike Rally</a> and the <a href="http://www.pwatoronto.org/">Toronto People with AIDS Foundation</a>
(PWA).
SpinTO is a unique project that harnesses social media to expand the
fundraiser's tool kit. From now until the start of the Bike Rally in late
July, <a href="http://spinto.ca/">SpinTO.ca</a> will feature Bike Rally participants sharing stories of their
experiences and the cause through new media like blogging, video podcasting,
Facebook and Twitter.
"The Bike Rally is a living, breathing community on wheels," says SpinTO
co-organizer and Bike Rally rider Mark Kuznicki. "SpinTO.ca will bring to the
public stories that are personal, inspiring or funny, and together speak to
the connectedness of this community, of why people ride in the Bike Rally.
It's a remarkable experience."
To kick things off, a SpinTO launch party will be hosted at The Mod Club
in downtown Toronto on Friday, May 15th, 2009. Featuring DJs, social and
interactive media, silent auctions, and unique performances, the event will
bring together Bike Rally participants, community leaders, and partygoers from
Toronto's technology, queer and cycling communities. Early bird tickets sold
out in 36 hours, so organizers expect a full capacity of 600 in attendance.
"You don't often get three vibrant and active communities connecting, so
the opportunities in terms of entertainment have been exciting," says
co-organizer Adam Schwabe, who is also a rider in the Bike Rally this year.
"People should expect the unexpected."
SpinTO will play a role in helping the Friends for Life Bike Rally
shatter its record-breaking $1.2 million fundraising goal, in benefit of the
PWA. Sponsors including The <a href="http://www.fairtradejewellerycompany.com/">Fair Trade Jewellery Company</a>, <a href="http://www.cycle-solutions.com/">Cycle Solutions</a>,
<a href="http://www.tinkugallery.com/">tinku gallery</a>, and <a href="http://www.mediastyle.ca/">Mediastyle</a> have already signed up and will be featured on
both the SpinTO.ca website and at the launch party.
