2008 saw completion of a personal resolution - a multi-year, five-stage
solo journey from San Diego to Jacksonville covering 4,500 km.
TORONTO, Jan. 21 /CNW/ - Toronto-based business coach Bernie Schmidt
announces his triumphant completion at end of 2008 of a solo trip cycling
journey across the southern United States. Schmidt set this challenge for
himself as a personal demonstration of how visionary goal setting with
measurable objectives can empower average people to achieve extraordinary
Schmidt, a non-athlete, completed five solo trips over several years in a
"connect-the-dots" journey that covered 4500 km across eight states spanning
the southern USA.
"I was looking for something to keep me motivated to exercise. I needed
an inspiring objective to stay committed to achieving the smaller, related
goal of keeping fit," says Schmidt. "I constantly tell my clients that being
emotionally committed to a larger vision or objective will help them overcome
obstacles in the day-to-day challenges. In finally completing this journey, I
hope I am showing that I practice what I preach."
In total, Schmidt cycled 29 actual days covering 4,500 km, achieving a
daily average of 155 km/day. His longest day was a 325 km 20-hour ride through
the broiling west Texas desert. Memorable moments include cycling through a
U.S. air force training base (while overhead jets practiced live bombing runs)
and pushing his bike through a desert at midnight, when a dirt road came to an
unexpected dead end.
"A major daily challenge throughout the trip was maintaining a positive
attitude," says Schmidt. "Regardless of what the weather or the terrain had in
store for me on any given day, I needed to keep my mood up and focus on how
good I would feel once I got to that motel at the end of the day's journey."
