Xtreme's Speedtest(TM) Tops 1 Million Downloads
TORONTO, Feb. 19 /CNW/ - Xtreme Labs Inc., a cutting-edge developer of
software applications for mobile devices reported that its Speedtest(TM)
application developed for the iPhone, which was ranked as the ninth most
popular download by Apple Inc. for 2008 in the Free Utilities category, has
surpassed 1 million downloads. Speedtest is a simple application that
determines the speed or bandwidth of an iPhone connection. Speeds can vary
greatly among wireless carriers, but also in various locations within the same
carrier network. The test has been run in more than 150 countries and has sent
10 terabytes of data through Carrier networks for characterization - the
equivalent to the printed version of the Library of Congress.
Xtreme's Speedtest has recently been released for Android and Blackberry.
Speedtest empowers iPhone users
iPhone users download the Speedtest application to find better WiFi
networks and evaluate their wireless carrier and determine they are getting
the speeds that they pay for. Depending on location, users can also compare
competing carrier bandwidth performance, or 2G versus 3G.
Speedtest determines both upload and download speeds. With Speedtest,
iPhone users can ensure they are getting the highest bandwidth connection with
their iPhone during bandwidth intensive activities and applications such as
browsing or downloading media files.
Powerful tool for wireless network carriers
While the Speedtest application has proven very useful to iPhone users,
the backend application has also presented significant value for wireless
network carriers in terms of characterizing bandwidth performance throughout
their networks. This information is extremely valuable to network carriers for
monitoring and improving network performance and ultimately the end user
"Now we know which wireless data service in a particular country is
reliable and fast," said Sahand Sojoodi, Principal at Xtreme Labs. "The
success of Speedtest has resulted in a growing database of mobile network
performance of each country and are working with network carriers to provide
the intelligence on their network performance."
