Top 10 communities announced for KRAFT HOCKEYVILLE 2008

    TORONTO, Feb. 17 /CNW/ - The fate of the KRAFT HOCKEYVILLE 2008
competition is now in the hands of hockey-crazed Canadians. The top 10 most
spirited hockey communities were selected from a record 1,100 nominations and
revealed on CBC Television February 17. The top 10 show is also available for
fans to view on-demand on www.cbcsports.ca/hockey. Fans have until February 23
at 11:59 a.m. ET to vote online (www.cbcsports.ca/hockeyville) or via
telephone (1-888-843-5604) for the five communities that will move on to the
final stage of the competition and compete for the prestigious KRAFT
HOCKEYVILLE 2008 crown.
    "The top 10 finalists edged out stiff competition by demonstrating
passion for the game and above all, great community spirit," said Dino Bianco,
President, Kraft Canada. "The quality of all submissions strongly attests to
hockey's foothold in Canadian culture."
    Two communities from each region and two communities regardless of region
were selected as finalists for the title of KRAFT HOCKEYVILLE 2008. The 10
advancing communities are:

    The first of the top five communities voted by Canadians will be revealed
during Game Two on CBC's HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA on February 23 and will be
profiled the following week, live on CBC's HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA on March 1.
The remaining four communities will be announced and profiled consecutively,
in the same manner from March 8 to March 29. CBC's Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey
will visit each of the top five communities for a live, on-location broadcast
to pay homage to the community's entry. (Please see below for detailed

    Following the five weeks of features, the lines will be open again for
another round of public voting to determine the KRAFT HOCKEYVILLE 2008 winner.
The winner will be revealed on CBC'S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA on Saturday, 
April 5.
    In addition to being crowned KRAFT HOCKEYVILLE 2008, the winning
community will receive $100,000 towards arena upgrades (up from $50,000 in
2007), as well as the honour of hosting CBC's Hockeyville Special next
September and a 2008/09 NHL pre-season game at their community arena. The four
runner-up communities will also be awarded $20,000 towards arena upgrades.
