Toews visits Canadian projects in Paraguay

OTTAWA, Aug. 28 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Vic Toews, President of the
Treasury Board, today visited projects supported by the Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA) in the Loma Plata colony and in Laguna Capitan.
Mr. Toews visited the Frigochorti Meat Packing and Processing Plant of
the Chortitzer Cooperative, where a CIDA-led project helped advance the
standards of meat inspection. The project will ultimately lead to improved
export opportunities in larger markets, such as the European Union and Chilean
markets, and result in safer and higher-quality meat products.
"This Canadian-led project is making a real difference. I was very happy
to be able to meet with the hard-working people on the ground. As a result of
this project, local communities are being strengthened and the economic
sustainability of local farmers is improving," said Minister Toews.
Minister Toews is meeting with several senior Paraguayan Government and
aid officials over a period of four days. He concluded his second day in
Laguna Capitan and is scheduled on Saturday to visit the Chaco and southeast
regions of Paraguay, where Mennonite-owned and -operated dairy co-operatives,
supported by CIDA, produce and process the majority of the country's milk and
dairy products.
