Tips and tricks on how to get the most out of your beauty products

The ELLE 2008 Beauty Grand Prix Winners have been awarded

Beauty Editor Michelle Villett shares how to make them work even harder

TORONTO, Oct. 10 /CNW/ - 750 women from across Canada have tested, tried,
evaluated and finally decided which are the best beauty products in the
country. Michelle Villett, Beauty and Health Editor at ELLE Canada, shares how
to make these winners and virtually every item in your beauty bag even more
effective. "We know from our jury that there are products out there in a
variety of price ranges that actually can deliver on what they say they will,"
says Villett. "These simple tips and tricks are a quick and easy way to make
great products better."

    Ten Tips To Try

    1. Store eye creams in the fridge. Cooler temperatures will speed up the
de-puffing process, making it look like you actually squeezed in
eight hours of sleep. Try the 2008 Beauty Grand Prix winner NIVEA
Visage Aqua Sensation Gel-Crème ($11), which also contains cooling
        cucumber extract.

    2. The simplest way to avoid clumpy mascara? Before applying, gently
wipe the excess off the mascara wand with a tissue. Cover Girl
VolumExact Mascara(*) has a non-clumping formation.

    3. Before using a self-tanner, exfoliate with a gentle scrub or loofah.
Dead skin cells contribute to the "streaky" appearance. L'Oreal
        Paris-Dermo Expertise Sublime Bronze Pre-Self-Tanning Scrub(*) ($10)
        is a great start.

    4. If you've coloured your hair at home but it's too dark, wash it
immediately with dish soap - it will strip and lift some of the
colour out. Follow with a deep conditioner to restore moisture.
Kerastase Lait Vital Incredibly Light Nourishing Care for Normal to
Slightly Dry Hair(*) ($39) offers great results.

    5. If you've been heavy-handed with your blush application, tone it down
with a touch of foundation, applied over the cheeks with a soft
        brush.

    6. Using too much styling product can weigh hair down, leaving it limp
and sticky. Mist lightly with water to dilute the product, then
        restyle.

    7. Light-reflecting powders and foundations give skin a gorgeous glow -
but they can also accentuate wrinkles. After applying, work a touch
of moisturizer into problem areas, such as laugh lines and crow's
feet, to smooth out fine lines.

    8. How to fix a smudged nail - fast? Slick on a coat of clear nail
        polish to smooth out imperfections.

    9. No time to shampoo? Greasy hair gets a quick refresh with a few
shakes of baby powder. It contains talc, which absorbs the excess
        oil.

    10. To hide a pimple use a concealer that contains salicylic acid. It
will calm the redness while drying out the blemish.
