Three charged with Defrauding the Government



    TORONTO, Oct. 22 /CNW/ - On October 9th, 2007 the Greater Toronto Area
Commercial Crime Section charged three individuals with offences under the
Criminal Code of Canada pertaining to the Canada Small Business Financing Act.
The charges are the result of a request for an investigation from Industry
Canada who is responsible for overseeing the Federal Government's Small
Business Loan Program. Industry Canada suspected that they had been defrauded
of the sum of $200,000.00 on a Small Business Loan that had been defaulted on
by the borrower. The investigation revealed that a false invoice had been
provided by a company, purporting to be supplying equipment for the set up of
a manufacturing business, to the borrower. It is alleged that the borrower
presented the invoice to a financial institution, received the funds, but
failed to set up the business as required by the Canada Small Business
Financing Act.

    The charges consist of three counts of Fraud Over $5,000.00 and three
counts of False Pretenses Over $5,000.00. Charged is:-

    Shishu PAL, age 53, of Mississauga, Ontario;
    Anil ANAND, age 41, of Mississauga, Ontario and
    Ashwani ANAND, age 41, of Mississauga, Ontario.

    The first appearance is scheduled for October 25th, 2007 at Old City Hall
in Toronto.
    "The Greater Toronto Area Commercial Crime Section is responsible for the
investigation of allegations where criminal conduct is suspected in relation
to the Small Business Financing Act. In partnership with Industry Canada, the
RCMP actively investigates abuses which occur within the Small Business
Financing process," stated Inspector Brian Verheul of the RCMP GTA Commercial
Crime Section.
