CALGARY, Feb. 22 /CNW/ - Williams Engineering Canada, in coordination
with the City of Calgary and Lindsay Park Sports Society, is proud to
announce the grand re-opening of the Talisman Centre on Wednesday,
February 23, 2010 at the Talisman Centre in Calgary, Alberta. Williams
Engineering Canada played a major part in the renovations of this
iconic Calgary landmark, which includes a roof replacement and upgrades
to the structural, mechanical, and electrical components of the
"The roof replacement was only half of the project," says Roger Miller,
Project Manager at Williams Engineering Canada's Southern Alberta
Region, "Additional upgrades and enhancements will help to alleviate
issues with the building reaching scorching temperatures in the summer
and wet, cold temperatures in the winter." The new roof at the Talisman
Centre is made from an exclusive TensothermTM fabric with Nanogel®. Created specifically for the Talisman Centre
project, the TensothermTM assembly is light and efficient and has the ability to mimic the
appearance of the previous roof system. The gel's ability to transmit
full spectrum light allows natural light to flow into the facility.
Nanogel has remarkable thermal properties and insulates four times more
efficiently than fiberglass or foam.
Design objectives were complex due to the fact that this project
involved the expertise from multiple fields of engineering. Williams
Engineering Canada was chosen as the prime consultant for the strength
they bring in communicating and integrating all engineering disciplines
within a project. The firm's consulting engineering professionals were
both innovative and cost effective to complete the majority of the
renovations in-house. The Talisman Centre's upgrades and renovations
are an ambitious venture and a significant community achievement that
Williams Engineering is proud to be part of.
Built in 1983, the Talisman Centre is locally known as an iconic
building on the Calgary skyline. After 27 years as a multi-use sports
and recreation facility, upgrades were needed to ensure the facility
could continue to play a dynamic and fundamental role in sport and
wellness activities for the residents of the City of Calgary and
surrounding areas. The facility spans approximately 25,000 square feet
of cardio and weight training space, it has an Olympic calibre dive
tank, a 200 metre running track, a steam room, and an on-site cafe.
Adding to the abundance of features, the facility is one of only two
locations in the world with the ability to host international
synchronized swimming competitions. To top it off, a 14,000 square
foot LifeMark Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine clinic is also located
on the property.
