MONTREAL, June 18 /CNW Telbec/ - Habitat for Humanity Montreal (HfHM)
launched today the building of a new duplex in the east end of Montreal. A
family with a strong commitment to the Hochelaga Maisonneuve community will
become proud homeowners of one of the units.
The Rochon family includes three children: twelve-year old twins and
their seventeen-year old sister. The family was selected based on its need for
decent housing, its capacity to pay an interest-free mortgage adjusted to its
income, and its willingness to work with Habitat for Humanity. The Rochon
family must in fact contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" to the construction
of its own home.
"When I learned that our family was selected," comments Pierre Rochon,
"my jaw dropped. I didn't know how to react. Later, when we told the children,
I felt on pins and needles, I kept pacing around. I haven't felt like this
since my wedding day!"
Habitat for Humanity Montreal president Stephen Rotman went on to thank
all those who have contributed to the project: "We would like to thank our
founding sponsors, Genworth Financial Canada, The Home Depot Canada and MCAP,
who believed in this project and donated $360,000 over three years to help
make it come true," he declared. "We also wish to emphasize the contribution
of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH), who are sponsoring
the Rochon Home to mark their 75th anniversary. Without the continued support
and leadership of these donors, we would not be able to provide a hand up to
Montreal families in need."
