THE RIGHT PEOPLE IN THE RIGHT PLACES - Lawyers Rely on Referrals, Staffing Firms to Find Skilled Support Staff, Survey Shows



    TORONTO, Jan. 28 /CNW/ - Legal support professionals seeking employment
would do well to cultivate their networks, a new survey suggests. More than
half of lawyers surveyed (51 per cent) said networking, personal or peer
referrals are the most effective resource for finding support staff. Using the
services of a staffing or placement firm ranked second, receiving 21 per cent
of the response.
    The survey was developed by Robert Half Legal, a leading staffing service
specializing in lawyers, law clerks and other highly skilled legal
professionals. It was conducted by an independent research firm and includes
responses from 300 lawyers among the largest law firms and corporations in the
United States and Canada. All respondents have at least three years of
experience in the legal field.
    Lawyers were asked, "Which of the following resources do you feel is most
effective for recruiting skilled legal support professionals?" Their
responses:

    "To fill legal support roles in growing practice areas such as bankruptcy
and litigation or to staff large projects, many lawyers are turning to their
professional or personal contacts for recommendations," said Jonathan Veale,
LL.B., division director of Robert Half Legal's Toronto operations. "With
increased competition for job seekers, it is essential for legal assistants
and law clerks to refine their networking skills."
    Veale suggests candidates consider including a specialized staffing firm
as part of their job search arsenal. "As many full-time positions and
project-based opportunities are never advertised, staffing firms can help tap
into the hidden job market since they have established relationships with a
variety of law firms and corporations. They can also provide insight on career
management, hiring and compensation trends as well as offer free professional
development training."
