THE REGIE DU LOGEMENT'S CONCILIATION SERVICE

MONTREAL, Jan. 16 /CNW Telbec/ - The Régie du logement wishes to remind
parties to an application that they can use its conciliation service.
When a person files an application at a Régie du logement office, he or
she is offered, or can ask to take part in, a conciliation session to try to
resolve the dispute with the other party, whether a landlord or a tenant.

The Régie du logement: a tribunal
    ---------------------------------

The Régie du logement is a tribunal that rules in disputes concerning
housing leases. A commissioner hears the evidence presented by the parties at
a hearing and rules according to the evidence and the applicable laws. The
parties must therefore convince the commissioner that they are right. The
hearing takes place in a hearing room. The tribunal subsequently renders a
written decision that is sent to the parties.
The Régie du logement's mission is also to promote conciliation between
landlords and tenants. It is in this context that it offers the possibility of
using its conciliation service.

Conciliation: a simple way to settle a dispute amicably

Conciliation is a means to settle disputes by providing the parties with
an opportunity to negotiate with the assistance of a conciliator, an impartial
person, in order to find an acceptable solution. The service allows the
parties to meet, in the same room, in the presence of a Régie du logement
conciliator. The conciliator is an experienced decision maker, an unbiased
third party, whose role consists in helping the two parties maintain good
communication throughout the session. The purpose of the session is to arrive
at an amicable agreement.

We at the Régie du logement believe in that method of resolving a
    dispute.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
                                 Please note
Conciliation is not offered for urgent applications, i.e. applications
related to the non-payment of rent, the preservation of dwellings or the
    fixing of rent.
However, if the plaintiff wishes, he or she can ask for a conciliation
session, even if the application he or she filed deals with one of those
    matters.
Conciliation sessions take place in the offices that handle the subject
    of the applications.
