Renowned U.S. educator Dr. Howard Fuller makes 3-day visit to Toronto
TORONTO, Jan. 7 /CNW/ - Dr. Howard Fuller, of Milwaukee's Marquette
University Institute for the Transformation of Learning, will be in Toronto on
a three-day speaking tour (January 7 to 9) to propose provocative free-market
oriented ideas to reform Ontario's education system.
"The former superintendent of Milwaukee's public schools, Dr. Fuller, is
renowned in the United States for his unending support for reforms which
encourage educational competition and which permit low-income parents to
choose their schools," says Doretta Wilson, executive director of the Society
for Quality Education, which is sponsoring Fuller's tour.
"The question of educational choice is extremely topical right now," says
Wilson, who points out the recent controversy in Toronto over a proposed
alternative Africentric school has focused debate on whether parents should
have more of a say in how their children are educated.
During his stay in Toronto, Fuller is scheduled to address the Economic
Club of Toronto, The Fraser Institute, and various community groups.
He will be available for media interviews.
In a recent article, Dr. Fuller made the following comment:
"Consider the impact of putting the right kind of parental choice in
the hands of families who have little or no power because they
control no resources, no levers of influence over the decisions and
decision-making process that impacts their children's education.
Consider how this power may change the shape of the future for their
children. And consider how the absence of this power may mean their
children will be trapped in schools that more affluent parents who
oppose choice would never tolerate for their own children."
