The National Magazine Awards Foundation and magazine creators and lovers across Canada prepare to celebrate the 31st annual National Magazine Awards.

TORONTO, June 2 /CNW/ - On June 6 the Canadian magazine industry will
gather at the Carlu in Toronto to celebrate and honour the very best in
magazine journalism at the 31st annual National Magazine Awards.
Since 1977 the National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) has carried out
its mission to recognize excellence in the content and creation of Canadian
magazines through an annual program of awards. Each year the awards gala
provides an opportunity for magazine publishers, editors, art directors,
writers, photographers and illustrators to converge and reconnect, to evaluate
and congratulate the work of their peers, and to feel good about magazines in
general and the contribution of the magazine industry to Canadian culture.
In this way, the annual National Magazine Awards is not just about the
winners - though with over 300 nominees up for awards this year this year
there are plenty of reasons to celebrate the quality of Canadian magazines -
but also about everyone who loves magazines: industry supporters, volunteers
and freelancers, and especially the readers.
At 97% market penetration, nearly every Canadian who can read reads a
Canadian magazine. A Print Management Bureau (PMB) survey last year found that
Canadians' average degree of interest in magazine content continues to rise.
Canadian magazines continue to deliver Canadian cultural and educational
content from coast to coast, and to develop communities of readers all across
the country.
In addition to the work of its professionals and its millions of readers,
the Canadian magazine industry benefits from an estimated 631,000 hours of
volunteer labour across the country. Such is the dedication of these countless
individuals that Magazines Canada three years ago inaugurated its Volunteer of
the Year Award; this year's co-winners are Jim and Linda Gourlay, owners and
publishers of Saltscapes magazine whose volunteer work on industry boards,
committees and conferences has helped drive a thriving magazine culture in
Atlantic Canada.
Service to the Canadian magazine industry is also exemplified in Charles
Oberdorf, winner of this year's Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement
from the National Magazine Awards. In a career as a writer, editor and
educator that has spanned more than 35 years, Charles has been colleague, a
mentor, and a teacher to many people, and has made a lasting impact on the
quality of magazines in Canada.
Charles will be recognized at the 31st annual National Magazine Awards on
June 6 in Toronto, when the Canadian magazine industry gathers to celebrate
the achievements of its countless creators and contributors. Gold, Silver and
Honourable Mention awards will be presented in 35 written, integrated and
visual categories. The winners of the annual awards for Best Student Writer
and Best New Magazine Writer will be recognized, and the awards presentation
will conclude with the announcement of the winner of Canada's Magazine of the
Year.
