The Mayor of Montréal congratulates Federal Elected Officials

    MONTREAL, Oct. 15 /CNW Telbec/ - Following the results of yesterday's
election, the Mayor of Montréal, Mr. Gérald Tremblay, offered his
congratulations to Prime Minister Stephen Harper as well as to the leaders of
the federal parties, Mr. Dion, Mr. Layton and Mr. Duceppe and to all
Montreal-area Federal MP's. Mayor Tremblay reiterated the importance of
supporting the development of Montreal and defending the city's interests. The
mayor also acknowledged the contributions of Elizabeth May, leader of the
Green Party, as well as all of the remaining candidates who participated in
the election.
"Given the current economic situation, it is essential to support the
different initiatives and projects taking place in Montreal in order to
contribute to the economic stability of the country. No one will deny that
Montreal, the second largest city in Canada and the metropolis of Quebec plays
an important role as a motor for social, economic and cultural development. As
a result, the Prime Minister's cabinet must defend and represent Montreal's
interests," said Mayor Tremblay, who called on all Federal MP's in the
Montreal area to defend the city. "Montreal-area MP's are ambassadors for our
city and I am counting on them to represent its interests."
Mayor Tremblay also repeated the importance of continuing to build a
sustainable partnership with other major Canadian cities in order to be able
to respond to their increasing needs in areas such as public transit,
infrastructure and finances. Mayor Tremblay said the new government must put
in place a national transport strategy centred on public transit while also
offering cities permanent sources of revenue that can increase in tandem with
the economy, "Close to 80% of the Canadian population lives in metropolitan
areas so we must create a new dynamic with cities that responds to the needs
of citizens," said Mayor Tremblay.
