The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated - Closure of the Sidewalks on the Jacques Cartier Bridge

LONGUEUIL, QC, Dec. 3 /CNW Telbec/ - The Jacques Cartier and Champlain
Bridges Incorporated wishes to inform pedestrians and cyclists that the
sidewalk and cycling path on the Jacques Cartier Bridge will be closed for the
winter season on Tuesday December 4 in early afternoon, for safety reasons.
Every year, the Corporation must proceed with these closures for the
safety of users and due to the associated difficulties with winter maintenance
of the surfaces. The bridge is prone to the formation of black ice due to mist
conditions from the St Lawrence River, not to mention the sidewalks are
slanted to drain water away, making them unsafe for cyclists and pedestrians
during freezing conditions. In addition the physical constraints of the
sidewalks make the snow removal process costly to perform.
The sidewalk and the cycling path will reopen in the spring.
