that the Honourable Michel Bastarache, who was recently serving as Justice of

held demanding positions in a variety of fields, including the academic,

Holder of several law degrees, Mr. Bastarache has been a legal translator
for the Government of New Brunswick, Secretary General of the Société des
Acadiens et Acadiennes du Nouveau-Brunswick, professor and Dean at the
University of Moncton Faculty of Law, Associate Dean of the Common Law Section
at the University of Ottawa, Director General of the Department of the
Secretary of State of Canada - Promotion of Official Languages Branch, a
lawyer in private practice, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Assumption Mutual Life Insurance Company, Judge of the Court of Appeal of New
Brunswick, and Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada. For more than a decade as
Justice of the Supreme Court, the Honourable Michel Bastarache has rendered
over 150 legal rulings among which many were landmark cases that helped shape
the law in Canada, particularly in the area of language rights.
Throughout his exceptional and successful career, Mr. Bastarache was the
recipient of eight honorary degrees and many awards, including the Ordre des
francophones d'Amérique from the Government of Québec, the 125th Anniversary
of the Confederation of Canada Medal, the Boréal Award from the Fédération des
communautés francophones et acadiennes du Canada, and the Officier de la
Légion d'honneur Medal from the Government of the French Republic.
