The Cricket Club Criticizes Tory Campaign

TORONTO, Sept. 5 /CNW/ - The 180 year old Toronto Cricket Skating and
Curling Club in north Toronto has long been known as "The Cricket Club". In
2003 the club successfully defended in court its right to this name when it
sought an injunction from a local developer who was using that name with
respect to a townhouse development in the same neighbourhood.
The Cricket Club takes great exception to one of the widely broadcast PC
Ontario radio ads now being aired. The ad attacks the government for its grant
of $1 million to The Ontario Cricket Association, when all it had asked for
was $150,000.
The Club believes the ad is inaccurate as it refers to a gift to a
cricket club, not a cricket association, and that it harms the Club by
saying... "The Cricket Club got so much money they couldn't spend it all and
its (sic) now sitting in their bank account". The real Cricket Club was not a
party to this transaction, and objects to the implication that it was.
Management of the Club and lawyers for the Club have asked that the radio
ad be stopped pending correction in order to eliminate any reference to The
Cricket Club's involvement with this transaction. This correction could easily
be made. These requests were repeatedly denied Mr. Tory's campaign office
until 4:00 pm Wednesday September 5, when they finally agreed to cease running
the ad.
Club General Manager Doug Knights is surprised and disappointed that the
campaign officials were not interested in correcting an inaccurate and
misleading ad that offends so many members of Toronto's oldest private club,
in a timely manner.
