MONTREAL, Oct. 23 /CNW Telbec/ - Shoplifting is an enormous problem for
retailers. Retail theft and fraud represent more than $800 million in losses
each year in Quebec. To provide concrete support to retailers in their
day-to-day battle against shoplifting and to counter the trivialization of
this scourge, the Conseil québécois du commerce de détail/Retail Council of
Quebec (CQCD) today officially launched its new shoplifting awareness
campaign, under the theme Shoplifting is stealing.
The CQCD also released the results of a study on retail losses associated
with shoplifting and internal theft as part of a major symposium attended by a
large number of retailers and loss-prevention and security specialists today
in Montréal. The CQCD's campaign targets all segments of the population:
youth, adults, employees, families and consumers. The intent is to develop a
wider intervention through various communication channels, in particular
schools (primary and cycle one secondary levels), as well as the various
municipal police forces and the Sûreté du Québec.
The campaign will run from October 23 to November 23. Various retail
establishments will display posters bearing the messages "Shoplifting is
stealing" and "Stealing is a crime" and retailers will distribute an
information and prevention leaflet aimed at increasing public awareness of the
risks and consequences of shoplifting. In addition, "Shoplifting is stealing"
stickers will be visible in retail establishments. The CQCD also intends to
intensify its relations with the media to inform them about this scourge.
"We are confident that this new campaign will have a positive impact. We
also believe that its message will increase public awareness of shoplifting
and its human and financial impacts, as this is a major problem that concerns
us all," concludes CQCD president Me Gaston Lafleur.
The Conseil québécois du commerce de détail/Retail Council of Quebec
(CQCD) is proud to promote, represent and enhance the image of the retail
sector and its members in order to ensure the sound development and prosperity
of the sector. The CQCD is an association of retail and distribution
enterprises representing more than 70% of retail activity in Quebec. It is an
indispensable interlocutor for the sector it represents.
