The CDN-NDG Borough Unveils the City of Montréal's Very First ZENN Electric Car

    MONTREAL, Sept. 26 /CNW Telbec/ - In keeping with the borough's Green
Plan, Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (CDN-NDG) Borough Mayor Michael
Applebaum, accompanied by Montréal Mayor Gérald Tremblay, today unveiled the
city of Montréal's very first ZENN electric car.
The CDN-NDG borough took advantage of the announcement of this electric
car to highlight other actions it has taken under its Green Plan to give
preference to environmentally efficient vehicles and promote sustainable
transportation. In particular, the borough has made bicycles available to its
employees for short trips on official business and has reached agreements with
Communauto to encourage car sharing. In addition, the borough is currently
planning to purchase two new hybrid pickup trucks for its public works crews
in 2009.
"Giving preference to environmentally efficient vehicles when replacing
municipal vehicles and promoting sustainable transportation are two of the
concrete actions in our borough's Green Plan," noted CDN-NDG Mayor Michael
Applebaum.
"What Montrealers want for themselves and their children is a city that
will reinvent itself with the focus on sustainable development, alternatives
to driving, new, comfortable and efficient public transit infrastructures,
top-quality urban development and neighbourhoods where families can live and
get around in a pleasant and safe environment. The actions taken by the
CDN-NDG borough under its Green Plan and especially the purchase of electric
cars are a specific and concrete response to what people are calling for,"
said Montréal Mayor Gérald Tremblay.
The new ZENN electric car, assembled in Saint-Jérôme, was acquired by the
borough for $16,000. It runs entirely on electricity, and can reach a top
speed of 40 km/h. In mid-June, Transports Québec authorized its use on all
public thoroughfares with speed limits up to 50 km/h. The CDN-NDG borough,
which reduced the speed limit on local streets to 40 km/h in 2005, plans to
make the new vehicle available to urban development employees for visiting
projects in progress and conducting studies around the borough.
The CDN-NDG borough Green Plan, adopted in June 2008, comprises seven
goals that will lead to 49 concrete actions aimed at creating an
environmentally responsible community. The Green Plan was produced in
co-operation with local citizens, employees, elected officials and public,
social and community organizations. The complete text of the Plan and the
accompanying video are available on the borough Website:
