Opening of the Courts of Ontario for 2008

10:00 a.m. Distribution of written reports prepared by the Court of
Appeal for Ontario, the Superior Court of Justice and the
Ontario Court of Justice
Location: Osgoode Hall, Judges' Reception, 130 Queen Street
Copies of the reports of each of the three Chief Justices
(The Honourable W.K. Winkler, Chief Justice of Ontario; the
Honourable Heather J. Smith, Chief Justice of the Superior
Court of Justice; and The Honourable Annemarie E. Bonkalo,
Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice) will be
available to members of the media.
1:30 p.m. Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN) Chief Justices'
Location: Osgoode Hall, Main Floor Atrium, 130 Queen Street
OJEN's Chief Justices' Award is an annual award created by
all three Chief Justices to recognize exceptional
contributions in promoting public understanding, education or
dialogue in support of a responsive and inclusive justice
system. The Award recognizes an individual who has made an
exceptional contribution to the furtherance of OJEN's
objectives by reaching out to under-served communities,
developing innovations, establishing effective partnerships
contributing to justice education programming. This year's
nominees came from all over the province. The three Chief
Justices will make the presentation to the recipient.
3:30 p.m. Special Sitting of the Courts to mark the Official Opening of
the Courts of Ontario for 2008
Location: Courtroom 6-1, Court House, 361 University Avenue,
Special sitting of the Courts of Ontario at which the Chief
Justices will deliver reports on the work of their respective
courts. It is anticipated that the Minister of Justice and
Attorney General of Canada (the Honourable Rob Nicholson),
the Attorney General of Ontario (the Honourable Chris
Bentley) and the Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada
(W.A. Derry Millar) will address the Court.
Cameras will be permitted in the courtroom so long as they
are not obtrusive.
