The Accessible Channel Selects MTS Allstream for Wavelength Solutions

TORONTO, April 3 /CNW/ - MTS Allstream Inc. ("MTS Allstream") announced
today that it has been selected to provide Wavelength Solutions to The
Accessible Channel, also known as TACtv. TACtv is a national, English language
described video and closed-captioned, basic high definition specialty service
television channel. MTS Allstream's Wavelength Solutions will provide TACtv
with high bandwidth applications and business continuity requirements to meet
the needs of persons who are blind, vision-impaired, deaf or hard of hearing.
"As one of Canada's first service guaranteed optical wavelength
solutions, MTS Allstream will give The Accessible Channel the ability to
transport data at the speed of light along fibre optic cables that carry up to
64 concurrent wavelengths of digital information on a single strand of fibre,"
said Dean Prevost, President Enterprise Solutions, MTS Allstream. "By working
together to provide better connectivity and applications, we are pleased to
help The Accessible Channel achieve its mission of providing television that
includes everyone."
"The Accessible Channel is pleased to work with MTS Allstream to provide
our viewers with uninterrupted information, drama, entertainment and other
programming," said Betty Nobel, Chair, The Accessible Channel. "There has long
been a need to improve access to TV for those with perceptual disabilities,
and we will continue to strive to provide the best available services to our
viewers."
"People shouldn't be excluded from media just because they are blind,
vision impaired, deaf or hard of hearing" says John Capobianco, Chair of The
National Broadcast Reading Service Inc. ("NBRS"). "In 2007, the Canadian
Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission approved and supported an
application from NBRS for a licence to provide TACTv. NBRS was created two
decades ago with a mandate to enhance media access for millions of
vision-restricted Canadians, and on January 29, 2009, TACtv went a step
further to ensure that everyone is included."

NBRS serves more than 5 million Canadians who cannot independently access
information due to blindness or other vision restrictions, learning or
physical disability, low literacy skills or impairments associated with aging.
