The 8th Annual Mississauga Marathon Weekend: A Run for All Ages, Abilities and Aspirations

MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 15 /CNW/ - The 8th annual Mississauga Marathon Weekend is a one-of-a-kind "Run For Everyone" with over 10,000 registrants ranging between the ages of six and eighty years old.  The Weekend includes a Boston-Qualifying Marathon; Half Marathon; Desjardins 10K and 10K Student Relay; Starbucks Coffee The Hazel 5K; 2K Family Fun Run/Walk; and Corporate/Team Relay options.  The goal is to get people of all ages and abilities out and running, whether they are elite athletes or simply recreational runners out there for the sake of better health and well-being.

"We want people to think of the Mississauga Marathon Weekend as a run for all ages and abilities, in this beautiful treed and waterfront community," says Elliott Kerr, President of Landmark Sport Group and Founder of the Mississauga Marathon.

The Mississauga Marathon's societal and community focus is evident in its planning and implementation.  While keeping entry fees low to ensure participation, the Marathon also donates numerous entries to charitable initiatives.  Over 1,500 volunteers donate their time and services to help ensure the success of race weekend, and all race participants are encouraged to use on-line fundraising tools to raise funds for local charities including: the Colorectal Cancer Association; the Credit Valley Hospital Foundation; the Trillium Health Centre Oncology Unit; the MS Society Mississauga Chapter; the United Way of Peel Region; the YMCA Mississauga; New Circles Community Services; and Cameron Helps focused on teen suicide awareness and prevention.

Beyond the event planning, the community itself makes Mississauga Marathon Weekend an event worth attending.  Over 30,000+ spectators line the running route with water stations, balloons, cheering squads and moral support to spur racers on.  While other marathons want to clear the finish area as quickly as possible, entire families come out at the end of the Mississauga Marathon to enjoy live music, face painters, mascots, balloon animals and more.

The 2011 Mississauga Marathon Men's Champion is Josphat Nzinga with a time of 2:27:50, and Tracy Wollschlager took the Women's Mississauga Marathon title with a time of 3:01:15.

Jacob Mengich and Jon Dow crossed the finish line in second and third in the men's category, while Julie Cummings and Jen Smith earned their podium finishes in second and third for the women's category of the Mississauga Marathon.
