Forecast says 50 million text messages will be sent on New Year's Eve
Holiday revellers are advised to warm up those thumbs
TORONTO, Dec. 27 /CNW/ - The traditional New Year's 'kiss' is expected to
be replaced by the 'tapping' of mobile keypads as Canadians are set to go text
crazy on December 31st.
According to Virgin Mobile, Canada is preparing to be hit by a text
blizzard with a record breaking 50 million text messages to be sent on New
"There's no doubt about it, we're becoming complete text maniacs and we
get right into it on big occasions. Whenever we celebrate, people love to
express how they feel with a text message. New Year's Eve is the climax of
that frenzy," says Nathan Rosenberg, Virgin Mobile's Chief Marketing Officer.
Rosenberg continued by saying, "If the clock strikes midnight and there's
nobody to make out with, it's nice to know you can turn to your mobile and see
if you've got any text message booty calls waiting."
Popular text message suggestions for the holidays include "kiss ya l8r
xoxo" and "I gotta bag of gifts 4 u".
Virgin Mobile says this year's forecast blitzes last year's New Year's
Eve text message tally of around 25 million and will set a new Canadian record
for the number of text messages sent in a single day.
Let's talk about text. Here are some more facts and figures:
- On an average day in 2007, Canadians sent around 31.5 million text
- This New Year, Virgin Mobile estimates Canadians will send on average
2 text messages each - that's double the amount of last year's
- Textaholics aged 18-30 will be the biggest texters on New Year's Eve,
sending an average of 4 text messages each
- Virgin Mobile estimates that one in four think they might get lucky
this New Year's Eve with a text, because it's easier to send naughty
texts than naughty phone calls
Virgin Mobile anticipates record traffic levels across its networks on
New Year's Eve, with a record number of text messages and a record number of
mobile phone calls set to be made.
