Team Canada World Juniors Win First Exhibition Game Defeating Red Bull Salzburg Juniors 5-0

Kyle Turris scores twice while goaltenders Steve Mason and Jonathan
Bernier combine for 18 saves and the shutout

SALZBURG, Austria, Dec. 17 /CNW/ - Team Canada looked a rested team and
played like a finely tuned one. Exhibiting fresh legs and the talent that
perennially makes them a pre-World Tourney favourite, Canada defeated a
valiant but ultimately overmatched Red Bulls Salzburg Juniors 5-0. Leading the
charge was the 2007 third overall pick of the Phoenix Coyotes, Kyle Turris,
with two goals, while linemates Brad Marchand and Claude Giroux each
contributed two assists. Goalies Steve Mason and Jonathan Bernier split time
in net combining for 18 saves and the shutout, while their counterpart Thomas
Innerwinkler made several impressive stops to help withstand a persistent Team
Canada attack, stopping 32 of 37 shots.
Also scoring for Team Canada were Riley Holzapfel and Luke Schenn, while
seventeen-year-olds combined on Canada's fifth goal, as Steven Stamkos scored
on a power play, with an assist going to John Tavares.
Red Bull is hosting Team Canada in Salzburg from Dec. 15 - 19 for their
pre-competition camp in the lead up to the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship
in Pardubice and Liberec, Czech Republic (26 Dec 2007 - 5 Jan 2008). In
addition to daily practices at the Red Bull Ice Hockey Arena, Team Canada will
make a trip tomorrow to the Red Bull Diagnostics and Training Centre, a
comprehensive physical training facility that has facilitated world-class
athletes such as World Cup alpine skier Erik Guay, Champ Car World Series
champion Sébastien Bourdais, and X-Games legend Travis Pastrana. Red Bull will
also conduct a series of team-building activities for the squad, including
go-kart racing and an Alpine day featuring everything from igloo-building to
ice-climbing and a tour of historic Salzburg.
