Teaching and Graduate Assistants at Lakehead University strike Friday, March 23

THUNDER BAY, ON, March 17 /CNW Telbec/ - Teaching and Graduate Assistants
(TAs and GAs) will be in a legal strike position as of Friday, March 23.
"We have worked as hard as we possibly can to reach a settlement," said
Local 3905 spokesperson Mike Walters. "We pleaded with the university not to
force us into this position, but they have consistently refused to work with
us on reaching an acceptable contract for our workers."
Teaching and Graduate Assistants have faced a jump in tuition fees and
workload and are asking for a wage increase in compensation. Other priority
issues for CUPE 3905 are job security and health benefits for members and
their families.
"Lakehead has put the lowest wage increase in the province on the table,"
said Walters. "At the same time they are refusing to negotiate any of our
other priority issues."
"The university must realize that the TAs and GAs are students and live
on extremely limited incomes. When their tuition fees go up to the extent they
have, and their workloads have increased almost three-fold, there has to be
appropriate compensation."
"Not to mention that everyone deserves a good health benefits for
themselves and their families."
