Tax Preparers Charged in Fraud Case

TORONTO, March 9 /CNW/ - After a ten month joint investigation the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police Greater Toronto Area Commercial Crime Section and the
Toronto West Tax Services Office of the Canada Revenue Agency have charged two
individuals.
    Charged are:-
Leye "Dickson" AKINGBESOTE, age 38 of Thistledown Boulevard, Toronto,
Ontario,
Karl WALTERS, age 30 of Ivan Daniels Drive, Markham, Ontario,
The above have been charged with one count each of fraud over $5,000 and
one count each of uttering forged documents. Both are scheduled for first
appearance at the Old City Hall courthouse on March 12, 2007.
It is alleged that AKINGBESOTE and WALTERS, acting as tax preparers,
produced falsified income tax returns for over 400 clients between February
2005, and August 2006, thereby defrauding the Government of Canada of over
$1 million. AKINGBESOTE and WALTERS included false Charitable Donation
deductions totaling over $3 million on tax returns prepared and filed on
behalf of their clients. In some instances, forged Charitable Donation
receipts were provided to the Canada Revenue Agency to support the Charitable
Donation claim. Investigators allege that AKINGBESOTE and WALTERS collected
over $300,000 in fees from their clients during this time period. The fee was
based on approximately 20 percent of the false refund they received. The
investigation is still ongoing, and further individuals are being sought with
relation to this fraud.
According to Inspector Brian Verheul, the Officer in Charge of the RCMP
Greater Toronto Area Commercial Section, "The RCMP, in partnership with the
CRA, actively investigates offences like this which occur within the income
tax process. The effectiveness of the investigation was increased by both
agencies' willingness to work together."
Any information regarding tax preparers or tax preparation services
offering fraudulent tax preparation services can be reported to the CRA
Informant Lead Center at telephone number 1-866-809-6841, the local police or
