"Talk to your pharmacist!" - Launch of the 2008 Pharmacy Awareness Week to be held from March 10 to March 14, 2008

    MONTREAL, March 10 /CNW Telbec/ - Each year, a large number of
patients--out of shyness or forgetfulness--neglect to ask their pharmacist
some important questions and by doing so, are putting their health at risk. As
a result, some patients are extending their treatment period and its related
costs, while others worsen their health condition.
To avoid this situation, the Association québécoise des pharmaciens
propriétaires (AQPP) (the Quebec Association of pharmacists-owners) has
decided, as part of this year's Pharmacy Awareness Week, to emphasize the
importance of maintaining an open dialogue with your pharmacist. "Talk to your
pharmacist" is the theme of this extensive awareness campaign to be held
throughout Quebec from March 10 to March 14.

Five things you need to tell
    your pharmacist

For pharmacists, every question is worth asking and every bit of
information is worth mentioning. Here are five key information elements that
patients should share with their pharmacist:

    1. Any allergy, including food allergies
    2. Medications they bought at another pharmacy or drug samples that were
given to them by their physician
    3. Natural health products they are taking
    4. Changes in their lifestyle or their overall health condition
    5. Their alcohol and tobacco intake, even if occasional

In fact, many pharmacists have noted potential risks and actual health
problems in patients that had neglected to provide them with this important
information.
In drug therapy, substance interactions, side effects and
contraindications are legion: in fact, there are thousands of them. The
Pharmacy Awareness Week is an opportunity for pharmacists across Quebec to
answer questions, with the help of the media, the general public might have
and to demystify some of the myths and popular beliefs surrounding the use of
medications and the consumption of natural products.

The Association québécoise des pharmaciens propriétaires was founded in
1970 and includes the 1,658 pharmacists-owners of Quebec's 1,653 pharmacies,
all commercial affiliates combined.

Editor's note: Many pharmacists from various regions of the province will
be available for interviews and forums during the Pharmacy Awareness
    Week.
