Survey says, most Canadians don't eat lunch at lunch!

ConAgra's new Healthy Choice Gourmet Steamers designed to tempt us back
    into the lunchroom

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 1 /CNW/ - More than half of Canadians (53 per
cent) spend the majority of lunch break reading, surfing the web, or working,
according to an Angus Reid survey for ConAgra Foods Canada. In fact, almost
one in five Canadians do not stop for a lunch break at all according to the
survey, which coincides with the launch of Healthy Choice Gourmet Steamers(TM)
into Canada.
The survey found that when Canadians do eat lunch they say they are
looking for healthy ingredients (32 per cent), quality (25 per cent) and
flavour (17 per cent). But the fact that more than a third of those surveyed
only take a lunch break of 16-30 minutes suggests they are also looking for
convenience.
"Lunch is the fuel that powers us through half our day and an important
part of a healthy lifestyle, but with few convenient, healthy and flavourful
options out there, too many Canadians are shortchanging themselves," said
Annabelle Nogueira, Healthy Choice Brand Manager. "By bringing Gourmet
Steamers to Canada, we are able to offer Canadians a flavourful, healthier
option that makes lunch a pleasure rather than an afterthought."
According to the survey, the majority of Canadians (60 per cent) feel
that steaming is the healthiest way to prepare meals, but until recently
preparing a steamed meal was not a convenient lunch option for many,
especially at work.
The new product line - Healthy Choice Gourmet Steamers - is the first
line of complete frozen entrees that incorporates microwave steaming
technology that helps preserve the flavour, texture and colour of each
ingredient.
"Obviously great flavour and texture are essential to the enjoyment of
your food but unfortunately with other frozen entrees it has been difficult to
maintain both. In fact the survey showed that almost one-third of Canadians
were not satisfied with frozen meals," says chef Tonia Wilson, a spokesperson
for Healthy Choice. "Gourmet Steamers are a more flavourful, nutritious
option, offering consumers tender meats and crisp vegetables. They also enable
consumers to control the amount of sauce they use with their meal."
The Healthy Choice Gourmet Steamers line uses a unique microwaveable
Duo-Tray Steam Cooker(TM) that circulates steam throughout the meal during
cooking. The Steam Cooker is composed of a bowl, which contains the sauce, and
a steamer basket, which nests above the sauce and contains the meat,
vegetables and pasta, rice or potatoes. While in the microwave, steam from the
sauce helps cook the meal components in the steamer basket. All the
ingredients can then be combined after cooking, with the sauce bowl doubling
as a serving bowl. The bowl design also helps ensure the meal is perfectly
cooked in less than five minutes, and requires no piercing or lifting of film.
This unique design allows each component of the meal to retain individual
character and freshness, addressing the key issues that some consumers have
with traditional frozen microwave meals, including the inability to taste
individual ingredients, excessive uniformity in flavour and texture, and
unappetizing appearance. In addition, Healthy Choice Gourmet Steamers are a
source of iron, containing at least one serving of vegetables, and have no
artificial flavours.
Healthy Choice Gourmet Steamers come in eight recipes and have a
suggested retail price of $3.99. Gourmet Steamers are available at most major
grocery retailers.

    About the survey

Angus Reid Strategies conducted the survey from May 28 to May 29, 2009.
Angus Reid Strategies conducted an online survey among a randomly selected,
representative sample of 1,017 adult Canadians who are Angus Reid Forum
panelists. The margin of error-which measures sampling variability-is +/-
3.1%, 19 times out of 20. The results have been statistically weighted
according to the most current education, age, gender and region Census data to
ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of Canada.
Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
