Surface Search Inc. to conduct geophysical surveys for the Alberta
Carbon Trunk Line
CALGARY, Sept. 7, 2011 /CNW/ - Surface Search Inc. (Surface) is thrilled
to announce their confirmed participation in the Alberta Carbon Trunk
Line (ACTL). Surface will be providing a geophysical survey solution
for the ACTL project. This will include detailed information on
subsurface conditions beyond the ACTL project area.
The ACTL is currently the first, commercial carbon capture and storage
(CSS) project in Alberta which will focus primarily on reducing
environmental impacts, while producing widespread economic benefits.
Surface will be responsible for conducting shallow geophysical survey
investigations at proposed horizontal directional drill (HDD) pipeline
watercourse crossings, and road crossings along the ACTL route. These
investigations will consist of collecting Electrical Resistivity
Tomography (ERT) data at the proposed HDD pipeline crossing locations.
The results will then be used to determine shallow geologic model
conditions, in profile view, present beneath each individual crossing
"HDD is a trenchless pipeline construction technique which Enhance
Energy is interested in using over multiple areas along the pipeline
route to greatly reduce the impact of construction on the landscape,"
said Paul Tarrant, President, Surface Search Inc. "By collecting
subsurface information at the crossings, our ultimate goal is to help
Enhance Energy achieve smoother construction operations through
advanced knowledge of the varying types of soil and bedrock conditions
that will be encountered during construction."
"Enhance is excited to have the opportunity to work with the specialists
at Surface," said Blair Eddy, Vice President Operations, Enhance Energy
Inc. "The Alberta Carbon Trunk Line is an important project to
Albertans, and with Surface's 20 years of experience in the field we
are confident in their geophysical survey solutions expertise."
The ACTL will position Alberta to become a world leader in CO2 recovery and allow significant advancements in reducing Canada's carbon
About Surface Search Inc.
Surface Search Inc. provides a broad range of shallow geophysical survey
solutions for project engineers, geoscientists and planners who require
detailed information on subsurface conditions beneath their project
areas. Geophysical surveys represent an environmentally non-destructive
means to explore ground conditions over broad areas and provide
contiguous subsurface information in 2 or 3-dimensions. With over 20
years of experience in providing geophysical services to a wide range
of industry groups on domestic and international projects, Surface
Search Inc. continues to offer clientele innovative solutions to their
subsurface mapping needs. For more information, please visit: http://www.surfacesearch.com/
About the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL)
The ACTL will be capable of gathering CO2 from several sources in the Alberta's Industrial Heartland and
transporting the CO2 to existing mature oil fields throughout South-Central Alberta. These
oilfields will see significant increases in production as CO2 is permanently stored in the reservoir. The capture and permanent
storage of CO2 will result in significant reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases in Alberta. The initial supply of CO2 will come from North West Upgrading Inc. and Agrium Inc.
