Sunfresh Farms Joins CHEP Pallet Pool

Company is seeing product damage and handling improvements

EDMONTON, Jan. 16 /CNW/ - Sunfresh Farms Ltd., one of Canada's leading
farmer owned produce companies and importers, today announced it is shipping
all domestically grown and imported product lines on pallets from CHEP, the
world's largest equipment pooling company, effective immediately. The company
transports vegetables grown by its member farms and produce from other parts
of North and South America to supermarket, grocery and foodservice wholesalers
across Western Canada.
Sunfresh Farms previously used an exchange pallet system and standard
one-way pallets to ship its products to market, but was seeing a rise in
product damage and prolonged loading and unloading in the warehouse due to
inconsistent pallet quality. With the move to a facility that features 30-foot
storage racks, the company also needed assurance that the pallets placed in
the warehouse were safe for workers.
"Our new racking system required a more consistent pallet, and that's
exactly what CHEP is providing. There haven't been any problems in the
warehouse since we started with CHEP, product damage is way down and the move
is helping speed things up on our shipping and receiving docks," said Dean
Seeger, CEO of Sunfresh Farms.
Seeger said that Sunfresh is now moving aggressively into the area of
processing fruit and vegetables, and the strength of the CHEP pallet will be
called on to support the unit loads of the new shipments, which will be more
fragile than the existing product lines.
"Use of the CHEP pallet for produce helps reduce product damage because
our high quality pallet protects loads better than alternative transport
packaging. Sunfresh is seeing the impact of this quality in its current
product lines and will see an even greater impact as they expand their
processing operation," said Jason Adlam, Director, Sales and Customer Service,
CHEP Canada.
